On 1 February 2019, the band announced a spring North American tour to promote the 1 February 2019 release of Encore (out via Island Records). In 2017, the band invited 20-year-old Birmingham native Saffiyah Khan to a show after a photo of her confronting an “English Defence League goon” in a Specials t-shirt at a counter-demonstration went viral.

In June 2015, her music video for “Dark Horse” became the first video by a female artist to reach 1 billion views on Vevo. According to Billboard, she is the 15th most successful dance club artist of all time. From May 2010 to September 2011, the singer spent a record-breaking 69 consecutive weeks in the top ten of the Billboard Hot vegas casino 100. The archdiocese sued, asserting the nuns lacked authority to sell the property and that any sale over $7.5 million required Vatican approval.

By then, however, Hudson had found new musical models in such rock artists as Freddie Mercury and Alanis Morissette, whom she had discovered through friends. Nonreligious music was forbidden in the Hudson household, and she grew up singing church hymns and gospel tunes. Her album One of the Boys (2008), featuring the hit “Hot N Cold,” sold more than three million copies in the United States. Katy Perry achieved mainstream success in 2008 with her single “I Kissed a Girl,” which became a number one hit in multiple countries. Back in 2018, a nun who was involved in a lawsuit with the pop star over the sale of a convent in Los Angeles collapsed and died during a court appearance related to the case.

“Wide Awake” was released on May 22 as the re-release’s second single, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one in Canada and New Zealand. That month, she became the first artist to have four songs sell over 5 million digital units when “E.T.” reached that mark along with “Firework”, “California Gurls”, and “Hot n Cold”. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five non-consecutive weeks, making Teenage Dream the ninth album in history to produce four number one singles on the chart.

The group, undergoing many line-up changes, toured and released several live recordings through the 1990s. Following the break-up of the original line-up, various members of the band performed in other bands and reformed several times to tour and record in Specials-related projects. Reverting once again to the name of the Specials, the band’s second album, More Specials, was not as commercially successful and was recorded at a time when, according to Hall, conflicts had developed in the band.

One of the Boys, released on June 17, 2008, garnered mixed critical reviews and reached number nine on the U.S. In response to speculation that her parents opposed her music and career, Perry told MTV News that they had no problems with her success. The first station to pick up the song was WRVW in Nashville, who were inundated with enthusiastic calls the first three days they played it.

In 1979, shortly after drummer Hutchinson left the band to be replaced by John Bradbury, Dammers formed the 2 Tone Records label and released the band’s debut single, “Gangsters”, a reworking of Prince Buster’s “Al Capone”.
